Woodworm

Overview

Woodworm is a term used for a range of beetles and weevils that attack timber by laying their eggs in small cracks. Over time, the hatching larvae burrow into the wood, creating tunnels and chambers that can weaken the structure of your furniture, beams, and floorboards. Our professional woodworm treatment services provide effective solutions to protect and restore your timber, ensuring your property remains safe and attractive.

What is Woodworm?

Despite its name, woodworm is not a worm but refers to wood-boring beetles. The most common species is Anobium punctatum, also known as the Common Furniture Beetle. These insects lay their eggs in small crevices on the wood’s surface. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae begin to feed on the wood, gradually creating intricate networks of tunnels that compromise the timber’s strength. Without timely intervention, an infestation can lead to extensive damage and costly timber replacements.

Types of Woodworm

Several species can infest wood, but Anobium punctatum is the most frequently encountered in domestic settings. Its three- to five-year life cycle involves the following stages:

  • Egg Laying: The female beetle deposits eggs in cracks on the wood surface.
  • Larval Stage: The larvae hatch and feed on the wood, creating tunnels.
  • Exit Holes: As the larvae mature, they move towards the surface, eventually emerging as adult beetles by creating small, circular exit holes.
  • Cycle Renewal: The adult beetles mate and lay fertilised eggs, perpetuating the infestation cycle.

Identifying Woodworm Infestations

Look out for these key signs of woodworm damage:

  • Circular Exit Holes: Small, round holes in wooden surfaces where beetles have emerged.
  • Frass or Bore Dust: A fine, powdery residue left behind by the larvae.
  • Brittle Timbers: Wood that has lost its strength and become brittle.
  • Visible Tunnels: Networks of tunnels within the wood structure.
  • Active Beetles: Occasional sightings of wood-boring beetles in your home.
