Damp Proofing Chorley
Damp Proofing in Chorley
We cover the whole of Chorley and the villages around it — Euxton, Adlington, Coppull, Clayton-le-Woods, Whittle-le-Woods and Buckshaw Village — across PR6 and PR7.
Chorley has two very different damp problems depending on where you live, and they need opposite treatments.
In the older stone-built weavers’ cottages and the Victorian terraces, the issue is nearly always penetrating damp through the walls. Millstone grit and sandstone are porous, and once the pointing goes soft, driving rain off the moors soaks straight through. You see it as a damp patch on an inside wall that gets darker after heavy weather and fades in a dry spell.
On the newer estates, and Buckshaw Village in particular, we see the opposite. Modern homes are built airtight to hold heat in, and they hold moisture in with it. Showers, washing and drying clothes indoors put litres of water into the air every day, and if the extract fans are undersized or switched off it condenses on the coldest surfaces — behind wardrobes, in corners, around window reveals. That is a ventilation problem, not a damp proofing one, and injecting a wall would do nothing for it.

Telling the Two Apart
There is a rough test you can do before you call anyone. Penetrating damp responds to the weather: the patch gets darker and larger after heavy rain and shrinks in a dry week, and it usually sits at a consistent height rather than climbing from the floor. Rising damp does not care what the weather is doing, starts at the skirting and works upwards, and typically stops at a tide mark about a metre up. Condensation appears on the coldest surfaces — external corners, behind furniture pushed against an outside wall, around window reveals — and is very often black mould rather than a brown stain.
Get that wrong and you spend money on the wrong treatment, which is the single most common thing we are called in to undo.
We recently resolved a failed damp proof course at a property in Leyland, a few miles up the road — a bridged DPC with salt contamination coming through the plaster. New chemical damp proof course, contaminated plaster taken off, walls re-rendered and finished.
